Educational Background
Dr. Ekhlassi was born and raised in Houston, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology before pursuing medicine at McGovern Medical School in Houston.
After earning his medical degree in 2016, Dr. Ekhlassi completed an internal medicine internship through McGovern Medical School’s Department of Internal Medicine. This foundation would later complement his interest in treating patients with complex dermatologic conditions.
Dermatology Research Fellowship
Before beginning his residency, Dr. Ekhlassi completed a dermatology clinical research fellowship at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine. As a licensed sub-investigator, he contributed to clinical trials involving conditions ranging from adult and pediatric psoriasis to mycosis fungoides.
His research experience included work through USF and Moffitt Cancer Center, giving him valuable exposure to dermatologic research and evidence-based medicine.
Residency and Leadership
Dr. Ekhlassi completed his dermatology residency at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa. During his final year of residency, he served as Academic Chief, a leadership position appointed by the program director. In this role, he represented residents at faculty meetings and coordinated academic activities including didactics, journal clubs, grand rounds, guest lectures, and medical student rotations.
Clinical Experience
Following residency, Dr. Ekhlassi practiced general, surgical, and pediatric dermatology in Florida before joining Cambridge Health Alliance in Massachusetts. He provided general and surgical dermatologic care to a diverse patient population, including those with limited access to healthcare. In 2023, he returned to the Tampa Bay Area and became co-owner of Waterside Dermatology. His practice includes general dermatology, skin cancer screenings, and skin cancer surgery.
Beyond Dermatology
For Dr. Ekhlassi, returning to the Tampa Bay Area also meant coming back to a community he is proud to serve. Outside Waterside, he enjoys spending time with his wife and dog, practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and getting out on the waters of Tampa Bay by boat.
